I knew from an early age I wanted to write “ad copy.” I grew up watching TV commercials, with great fascination. In second grade, I fell in love with Elizabeth Montgomery, the star of “Bewitched,” whose on-camera husband, Darren, worked as a copywriter at “McMann & Tate,” the show’s fictional ad agency. Darren would come home with all sorts of crazy ideas. He and the agency’s principal, Larry Tate, would pitch these ideas to clients, often with a little “magical” help from “Sam,” Darren’s “bewitching” wife, played by Ms. Montgomery.
So now that I’ve sufficiently dated myself, I’m happy to say that I am one of those rare birds who knew, early on, what I wanted to do with my career. I followed the path all the way to the writing of this blog. I can’t imagine doing anything else for a living. I get up everyday charged up to get to my desk and start. If I don’t have any pressing “client” work on tap to accomplish, I’ll spend my time writing articles for local publications. Or for the church. Or for a friend. Or just for fun. I enjoy the process.
There’s actually a term for it: the “flow.” It describes a state of complete immersion with a task, wherein time and space are suspended. You can type “creative flow” in your browser search window and find all sorts of articles on the subject.
The flow presents itself as an unconscious state, wherein the mind relaxes and inspiration flows freely. Sports, music, meditation and sex can all lead you into the flow. If you’ve ever been in a deep state of prayer, you will know what I mean. Your blood pressure comes down. You feel a serene calm about you. The Spirit is present. You become a channel for Higher Thought. Time flies. Your best work happens effortlessly.
It is my belief that God gives each one of us a unique gift through which He provides for us and connects with us on a daily basis. I am grateful He revealed my gift to me at such an early age. I am even more grateful for the education I received to polish my craft and the clients who pay me to apply it regularly. Writing marketing content, for me, is a blessing from God. It is the most fun I can think of and still call “work.” It is my prayer that you, too, have found your blessing, and that you are blessed to apply it in your daily life.
Thank you, God, for your deeply satisfying flow!
